Completed in June, 2015, the mid-sized granite sculpture Day Leaning into Night depicts diametrically opposed faces on a single head. According to the artist, Day is a female face who looks south signifying a new beginning while Night is a male face who looks north, contemplating the passage of day into night and experiencing the setting solitude brought on by darkness. Yet the imminent message in Day Leaning into Night, along with most of van den Berg’s oeuvre (including her acrylic paintings), is the rebirth of a new day and the renewal process.
